Consul General Hosts Global Network of Women's Shelters

Consul General Julie A. Ruterbories hosted the delegates of the Global Network of Women’s Shelters (GNWS) and other community leaders at a reception in honor of the GNWS’s interim conference Exchange of Shelter Practices taking place this week in Amsterdam.  Delegates from many countries including Nepal, Rwanda and the United States of America are participating in the discussions.  U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands, Fay Hartog Levin, spoke to the guests and reiterated the United States’ commitment to improving the plight of women around the globe.  She noted the opening of the State Department’s Office of Global Women’s Issues in April 2009 and extensive funding of many non-governmental and community programs which combat violence against women in numerous countries world-wide.
